Bright Orange Speckled Rattlesnake

A Southwestern Speckled Rattlesnake, Crotalus mitchelli pyrrhus, from Maricopa county. The color is amazing, but not atypical for this species in this area.

That is an incredible snake. Is it true that the base color generally coincides with the soil color in that snake’s environment?

  2. Bryan says:

Not always … some of them seem to be more related to location than the surrounding rock. Most speckleds’ color can be predicted pretty accurately based on where they will be found, regardless of the coloration of rock or soil, though there are always exceptions.

I have seen one of those in Southern California
